Everyone knows that “Thrifting” is the new shopping! It’s the art of going to a thrift store and searching for the most trendiest, gently used clothing you can find. It is definitely a hot adventure for college students because you’re able to find some nice clothes for a very affordable price.
Most thrift stores carry all sizes and both genders! They have a mens, women, children, infants, and even a shoe section. However, some thrift stores do cater to a more specific audience. For those types of stores, I’d do my research ahead of time to make sure I’m going to the thrift store that suites my needs.
I believe that Thrifting is important because it allows people to give back to the community by donating their gently used garments to non-profit organizations. It also allows for recycling which helps keep the earth clean!
Should You Thrift?
Thrifting isn’t defined to a specific demographic, it caters to everyone. Society stereotypes thrifters as those who like to “penny-pinch” and people who like to collect antiques.
It’s no secret that thrifting saves bundles of money, but it allows you to try new things and become adventurous. Say you want to experience with making your own clothes, well dropping by the thrift store will save you lots of time and cash! I also love the fact that thrift stores carry a variety of styles and trends.
Most people thrift when they are preparing for costume, a show of any kind, or when they are creative enough to make and design their own clothes.
So should you be found thrifting? Absolutely
As mentioned earlier, thrifting doesn’t have a race, color, gender, age, or religion. Everyone enjoys doing it! Most people just spend their spare time looking for things that aren’t found in department stores, or items that are no longer being sold on the racks. If you are looking to save money, I would recommend shopping at thrift stores for your every fashion need.
What to Look For?
If you are a first time thrifter, you probably are asking a ton of questions in your head about what you should be looking out for. These are important questions to ask because as with any shopping experience, you want to go prepared and knowledgeable about what you are looking for.
For starters, you want to look at the condition of the garments. You want to make sure that they are indeed “gently” used. This means the garments are not ruined in any form or fashion. Look for,
- Rips/Tears
- Faded areas
- Quality of the material
Depending on what you’re use of the garments are it may be appropriate, but for the most part, you don’t want to purchase anything with the above defects
Due to the fact that you are purchasing from a thrift store, if a defect is found, they may not be able to accept it back for a number of reasons. I’d highly advise you to thoroughly inspect your garment of choice before you make your final purchase.
What Are You Waiting For ?
Make it your priority to find a thrift store and get some shopping in! I hope I’ve broke through the stereotype about thrifting that you may have had in your head from society. People who you think is dressing the best may actually be thrifting!
I think its something that people should do at least once in their lifetime for the experience. You never know what fashion trend from the past will make it’s way back to the future, and if you’re lucky, you may find it on the racks at your local thrift store!
